Planning Guide

 

4 to 6 Weeks before Moving Day

 

  • Let Fitzgerald Moving know what date you would like to move.
  • Arrange to close charge accounts with stores.
  • Plan to use frozen or fresh foods before moving.
  • Ask druggist for copies of renewable prescriptions.
  • Discuss your move and the costs with Fitzgerald Moving.
  • Make arrangements to transfer or resign club memberships.
  • Gather letters of introduction from your clergyman, business associates, lawyer, etc.
  • Prepare a list of friends, relatives, businesses and professionals to notify once you know your new address.
  • Keep all receipts and papers on hand that are related to moving.
  • Decide what is to be moved and what to sell or give away.

 

2 to 3 Weeks before Moving Day

 

  • Notify your post office, find out your new postal code and obtain a supply of Change-of-address cards.
  • Contact the phone company to arrange service in your new home.
  • Have your rugs and draperies cleaned.  Leave the rugs rolled and wrapped.
  • Start packing you plan on doing it yourself.
  • Arrange to have utilities disconnected at a suitable time.
  • You are responsible for the transport of valuables, cash, etc.  Your bank may be able to help
  • Prepare a floor plan of your new home.  Identify each room by name – keep copies of this plan with you during your move.
  • Consult your veterinarian to make sure that your pets have all required certifications and inoculations.
  • Have a garage sale to lighten the load.
  • Notify your bank of your move.
  • Transfer insurance to take effect at your new address.
  • Contact utility companies at your destination to arrange service.
  • Large power tools such as saws and lathes should be dismantled.

 

One Week before Moving Day

 

  • Give away any plants that are not being moved.
  • Take down curtains, draperies, blinds, shelves, etc. that are to be moved.  The mover does not perform these tasks.
  • Set aside and label those items you do not want packed or moved.
  • Pack lightweight clothing such as sweaters, lingerie, etc. in bureau drawers, taking care not to overload them.
  • Wash and dry all laundry and pick up all dry cleaning.
  • Pack the telephone directory – it will come in handy.
  • Remove liquids, breakables and heavy items from drawers.
  • We recommend you discard bottles and jars containing liquids.
  • Separate any items to be packed the last day.
  • Drain fuel from the lawnmower or any other equipment.
  • Dispose safely of all flammables, fuel, paint, ammunition, fireworks, etc.

 

One Day before Moving Day

 

  • Wash and dry all dishes.
  • Be on hand when the movers arrive.
  • Pack suitcases.
  • Pack the car for the trip.

 

Moving Day

 

  • Advise the Moving Foreman of any items you wish to have as soon as you move into the new house.
  • When the packers arrive, show them any items that you feel need special attention.
  • Sign the Certificate of Packing and Unpacking when packers are finished.
  • Sign the Inventory and keep a copy.
  • Your Moving Foreman will be in charge.  Ask him any questions.
  • Make a final tour of the premises with the Moving Foreman to be sure that all items have been loaded.
  • Before signing the Bill of Lading, check all the details.

 

Arriving

 

  • Notify the destination member of your arrival.
  • If you do not know whom to contact, telephone Fitzgerald Moving at 507-235-9669.
  • As soon as possible, check your goods.  Report any loss or damage to Fitzgerald Moving.
  • If any goods are to be stored, advise the warehouse of any items you want to remove or inspect so that they can be accessible.
  • Stand in a convenient locations during unloading to inspect the condition of your furniture, direct it’s placement and mark it off on the inventory.
  • Receive and sign for the shipment even if there is damage or loss.  Note damage or loss on the inventory.
  • To make sure that all furniture and boxes will placed correctly, fasten a clearly-marked floor plan near the entrance.
  • Be on hand to accept delivery or arrange for someone to be there when the van arrives.
  • The movers will lay rugs and reassemble furniture and appliances.
